A recluse who has no fun in life...yet is a very famous artist. Most people have never seen him. His faithful servant dies and during all the confusion he is mistaken for the servant. News goes out to the whole world that he (the painter) is dead. The artist didn't know that the servant was to be meeting a girl for the first time at the very same hotel that the artist was going to be staying at. They fall in love. They marry. Now, to support his new wife...he begins to paint. At first everyone thought it was the servants style (to paint like the artist he once worked so closely with). But, he gets caught. And how often do you get to HEAR Lillian Gish? She's great as the completely unflappable girl. The court room sequence at the end is quite odd. And it all ends too quickly. It is easy to see why Gish became as famous as she did. She is a most attractive lady with a radiantly charming and engaging presence. The film is engaging in its plot also. I must say I watch it over and over again. I judge a movie on one thing---is it truly entertaining. After all, when all is said and done movies are fictitious and have no real value other than entertainment. This may have been silly, but it was truly entertaining. The C=46 was one of the finest airplanes ever made, but it can't hold a candle to a modern Boeing 777. But the 777 will never have the impact on the world that the C-46 had. A 1933 movie may be great if one considers the knowledge and technology of the time, even though it may look like a B-movie when compared to a modern film. This was a very entertaining film to me.
